Creating Space for Spiritual Growth in Our Family
“So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.”
-1 Peter 2:1-3 NLT
Often when you hear this scripture you may have heard it applied to the concept of adults maturing in their relationship with God. However, as parents, God calls us to be our children’s first spiritual accountability partners.
Often when children are raised to know about Christ from birth, as they get older their prayers and time spent with God can get routine. As adults we get the same way. If we’re not careful, daily devotions and prayer can become more of a check in the box for our day. God wants us to desire to be with Him and grow in deeper relationship with Him daily.
But how can we do this?
First of all, know that the Holy Spirit is our source and He is enough to help parents and our children to “fan the flames” to stay on fire for Christ. “For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you…” -2 Timothy 1:6 NIV
If you or your children need to create more space for spiritual growth, pray as a family for a revival of Jesus’s love and His presence. Our development as believers is not the sole responsibility of the church or Sunday school ... Our homes must be the central development center of our family’s spiritual growth.
As parents we create the culture God desires in our homes. It’s up to us to regularly look at our calendar and our weekly routines to assess where our true devotion lies. How are you and your family using all your resources to glorify God? Can your family give more generously to God, with your time, money, or resources?? Ask God to help you to honestly assess where are investing your time.
“Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?” -Matthew 16:24-26 NLT
Now comes the call to action. What has God showed you? Will you do it? Create space to Pray. Join a new Bible class. Watch or listen to more Christian programs. We have more at our disposal to help us to grow in Christ, than any generation in times past. We have no excuse not to diligently seek God and allow Him to mold us by His Spirit. We can do nothing in and of ourselves. We must rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As summer break is around the corner for most of us, let this be a time to slow down and recalibrate our family’s spiritual life. Create space for God to manifest Himself to you and your family in a new way.
God will meet us friends! He wants our families to keep growing in Him. Let revival begin within the walls of your home today!!
