Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Multiplication with a Bridge to Division by Math-U-See

I decided to introduce multiplication facts to my 2nd grader earlier this year, and he has been able to handle the concept pretty well. He has mastered the lower numbers, and so I felt that this program would be a great way to help him sharpen his skills and learn the higher-level facts.

We enjoyed trying Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) for Multiplication with a Bridge to Division by Math-U-See. The Accelerated Individualized Mastery (AIM) program uses the Math-U-See multi-sensory strategy. This worked great for my son! When doing the practice lessons your kids use manipulative blocks, write things out, and say the facts out loud.

I have already taught the commutative and associative properties of addition. Once multiplication was introduced, my son learned that these properties also apply to multiplication. However, for him to not just see multiplication as a set of rules, I wanted to utilize Math-U-See to assist in his calculations and mastery of understanding.

The first step was an assessment of what facts my son already knew. The assessment has several multiplication facts and you quickly quiz your student, and they give a verbal answer. I was pleased with my son’s score but, I could see room for improvement. This assessment has helped me be able to see my child's progress as he moved along through the lessons.

We familiarized ourselves with the numbers that were for each color-coded manipulative block. This helped him to begin memorizing, facts with a little more speed.

After purchasing this set, your access code will give you the ability to watch instructional videos online. The videos lay out specifically how to present each practice lesson to your child. The resource guide included in this kit also has lesson plans and details on how to use manipulatives. There are additional free online drills and worksheets that can be found on the Math-U-See website, to practice facts.

Overall, this program is great for helping with mastery and a bridge for younger students' into division. If you are still on the fence about whether or not to try out this program, read some of the other Homeschool Crew’s reviews and how they have used with various age groups.
