Motivating Your Children to Excellence
There is a clear distinction between giving your best and doing just enough to get by. As parents, I think we can all agree that we want our children to function in a spirit of excellence when it comes to any of the things that they do. But excellence is a condition of the heart. But how can we begin to cultivate that?
The Ultimate Model
Give them a model of excellence. Jesus is our ultimate model. He finished the work God wanted Him to do and today we all reap the benefit as His sons and daughters. Countless times He was faced with difficulty and utter despair and yet He persisted. The Bible says that He was confronted with everything we could ever deal with. How much more will our children’s lives be blessed and rewarded when they do the will of God, by giving their best to every task?
Ask your children, how they want to live when they leave home. Include the realities of life as they ponder what life might be like. Sometimes showing our children is more impactful than just telling them. Ask your child how they think a life of meaning and purpose will be accomplished if they don't utilize the gifts and talents God has already placed within them. Encourage them to consider how their lives have been impacted by other people's persistence and gifts. Ask them how they can share their gifts for the benefit of their community and the world.
Don't Let Up
Partner with your child to repent for lackadaisicalness and confess the promises of God daily, making a commitment to excellence and persistence. Include extended family members and friends that can share their stories to further encourage your child. We are our child’s designated accountability and it’s our responsibility to never give up hope. God will sustain you as you do your part and believe by faith for your child’s bright and best future. God will give you the grace you need to remain steadfast in parenting. And always remember that there is a legacy of blessing when we live in excellence and resolve to stay in the place that God has called us to! As you encourage your children to live in excellence, you’ll find that you will be inspired to live in excellence as well.
